"Email from the Communications Director for Alderman Schulter:

Alderman Schulter and staff will be conducting an internal meeting next week with representatives from the Department of Business Affairs and Licensing and Corporation Council to review what the next steps will be for reviewing the concerns brought to the Alderman’s attention by the music community about the Mayor’s Promoters Ordinance. "It Ain't Over Until The Fat Lady Sings" (taken directly from savechicagoculture.org) - May 15, 2008

If you haven't already noticed, my main focus is on the news of this TEMPORARILY TABLED "Promoter's Ordinance." It has to be.

The following is taken directly from the blogpost at www.savechicagoculture.org (people, PLEASE make sure you go to the aforementioned site and sign up for their RSS feed to stay informed. PLEASE - let's keep marching! The future of Chicago's Live Arts scene depend greatly on this!)

Peace, love and LIVE ART in Chicago,
David Kav

++++++++++++++++++++++++++

It’s Not Over ‘Til The Fat Lady Sings
Or the comedian tells a joke. Or the thespian acts. Or the poet recites. Or the band plays.

Basically folks, as far as this ordinance goes, it ain’t over.

There’s definitely cause for celebration. We got the city government’s attention and they pulled the proposal from today’s vote and that is an accomplishment. While I did enjoy some champagne last night, our work isn’t done. The ordinance has gone back to the Committee on Licenses and Consumer Protection where they’ll be tweaking it yet again to “ensure that the concerns of Chicago’s music and entertainment industry are examined.”

Don’t get comfy. Daley wants this passed, and this is the man who ripped up Meigs Field in the middle of the night.

According to Ben Joravsky’s Clout City blog in the Chicago Reader, the reason 500+ seat venues are exempt from this version of the proposal is to appease the big arenas. He’s guessing the next round will just serve to remove opposition from mid-size venues like Metro and Martyr’s. Hmm, guess who Alderman Schulter met with yesterday? You got it - Joe Shanahan, owner of Metro; Nick Miller, talent booker for Jam Productions; Ray Quinn, owner of Martyr’s; and Sean Mulroney, co-owner of Double Door.

They SHOULD be protected, but that’s not the end of it. It’s going to be our job - all of us - to make sure not only are the mid-sized venues exempt, but also the smaller venues all the way down to the individual performers.

Don’t let them underestimate our creative community. We’re the same people who won’t rest until we have the perfect phrase or chord or inflection and the people who respect and enjoy that diligence. We cannot rest until our means for exhibiting and witnessing that creativity are no longer threatened.

Passionately yours,

WE WON (for now!) The Promoter's Ordinance vote is postponed for further review! - May 13, 2008

Directly from www.savechicagoculture.org and from Theresa Carter from www.thelocaltourist.com:

WE DID IT!!! THE ORDINANCE HAS BEEN PULLED!!!!

For now…

We do need to keep up on this. They’re putting it back in committee for more work. At least this time there will be some input from the entertainment community. Bookmark this site to keep up on the developments!

In the meantime, tonight I, for one, am celebrating!

...

PREFACE TO THE ABOVE ON WEB SITE:

WE DID IT!!!!
The promoter’s ordinance is being pulled and WILL NOT BE VOTED ON TOMORROW!

I received confirmation from Alderman Schulter’s office that it’s been pulled. They’re going to return it to committee, so we’ll have to keep our eyes open, but this time there will be input from the entertainment community.

Congratulations to all of you who signed the petition (all 5,742 of you!), who called your Alderman, who posted blogs and comments and told your friends and spread the word.

I don’t know about you, but tonight Michael Teach and I are going to go listen to some live music. After having some champagne. Michael Narvaez has rehearsal or you can be sure he’d join us. Especially now that his band can just worry about being a band!

Theresa Carter

p.s. My birthday bash is this Thursday at Fado, 111 N Clark, from 6 until they throw us out. Come join us to now celebrate this grand effort to protect Chicago’s culture. ‘Cause now we won’t need a license for it

++++++++++++++++++++++++++

A huge and sincere THANK YOU to EACH AND EVERY ONE OF YOU who contributed, commented, called your Aldermen, and spread the word! Let's keep marching and keep our eyes and ears open! The future of Chicago's LIVE ARTS scene depends upon it!

A happier and more energetic (if that's humanly and Earthly possible..heh..)

VERY CONCISE message re: Promoter's Ordinance! - May 13, 2008

I HAD to take THIS particular blog and post it EVERYWHERE. In his words:

David...

You not only have my permission...you have my insistance!

YOU can save the Chicago Independent Music Scene!

Here's how...

*****

Chicago's City Council and Dept of Business Affairs are about to bring an end to the Chicago music scene as we know it with legislation aimed at curtailing music promoters with a heavy handed, poorly written new licensing scheme. This new ordinance will adversely impact musicians, DJ's, venues and promoters and dramatically reduce the music industry in Chicago. It was rushed through committee to the full council without proper public comment, scheduled for a vote this Wednesday morning!

Don't let 5/14 be the day Chicago's music died! Please forward this message to your facebook groups and email lists.
It is being covered widely in the press, but there's little time to act. Help us stop this disaster! we want to FLOOD Aldermanic offices with phone calls, emails and faxes voicing outrage. Fwd this to your friends and direct them to this group they can learn how to take action on this important issue by 6pm Tuesday! Instructions can also be found at

http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=14448841708

Lets show City Hall that Music Matters to Chicago!

Step 1 Read up on the issue at Chicago Music Commission: http://chicago-music.org/promoters.php Its a solid overview with links to the ordinance, press coverage and more.

Step 2 Find and Contact your Alderman by email AND phone: http://www.chicityclerk.com/citycouncil/alderman/find.html

Step 3 Tell your friends to do the same.

What to say
(EDIT AND CUSTOMIZE as necessary)

As a proponent / member of our city's musical and arts landscape, I wish to express my alarm at the pending legislation regulating Event Promoters, which will come before City Council Wednesday morning.

The proposed ordinance poses serious problems as written, and if enacted, will severely impact one of the key economic drivers of our city. The music industry and its ability to effectively engage in lawful and already regulated business is crucial to the cultural, social and economic health of Chicago. It is one of the core elements of our image- Chicago's heritage in blues, jazz and rock are internationally known and key to our vibrant and thriving tourist trade. The many music venues, musicians even community organizations in our midst will have great difficulty with the ordinance as proposed. Everyone from club owners to musicians to members of the many culturally diverse communities will be impacted by its egregious and clumsy fashion, which is akin to to using a shotgun to swat a fly.

Our valiant Police will find it difficult to effectively enforce, especially at a time when their critical eyes are needed to protect school students trying to stay alive. Taking officers away from communities to patrol concert venues makes mockery any true concern for the citizenry. Few if any people have ever found themselves looking down the barrel of a loaded guitar, and I look forward to that that day when the ills of society in most dire need of legislation and enforcement are not the violence in our streets but the finer points governing the promotion of music and its aesthetics.

The manner in which this ordinance was developed, largely without input from the music community it will affect (in spite of claims otherwise by representatives of the City's Department of Business Affairs), and in the rushed manner that attempted to prevent additional comment or scrutiny from the public in the committee phase, is troubling and counterproductive. I am troubled to learn that the revised ordinance came out of committee without opportunity for further review and was given just 4 business days for review and feedback from members of the public and the music industry. This mode of legislation by stealth is bad for government, bad for the city and makes for bad, unenforceable laws.

This legislation will have the inverse affect intended, driving bad actors in the Event Promotion area underground, making their illegal activity more difficult to prevent and properly regulate. More importantly, it will unnecessarily complicate the already difficult job of legitimate artists, venues and promoters. It will result in fewer opportunities for artists, diminished performances for the public to attend, loss of revenue for the venues, closure of businesses and a grave impact on Chicago's ability to maintain any claim of cultural vibrancy on the world stage as well as on its economic bottom line.

We all know there is a good way to regulate and legislate event promotion in the City of Chicago that protect this largely lawful sector without severely damaging its impact on our city's economy or its vibrant arts and culture scene, as well as protects the interests of citizens and visitors, who have a right to a secure and safe experience while enjoying the fruits of their labor.

The proposed ordinance will achieve neither. It should be re-committed for further revision pending input from a council appointed task force comprised of members of the music industry and promoter community. No doubt there are many of the music community in our ward contacting you about this issue. Pay them heed. In the event you are unable to return my call before this matter comes to a vote on Wednesday morning, I urge you to vote "NO" and to ask your colleagues to do likewise.

Respectfully,

Jeff Brown
Entertainment Attorney,
Musician,
Music Promoter

As a playing musician and sound engineer in this city for almost thirty years I've seen a lot of great talent struggle in this town, but always had opportunities by starting out in smaller venues and having a chance to work their way up and build followings. I've had the opportunity to do sound for the Smashing Pumpkins when they were doing smaller clubs, and saw Styx playing at a high school before their first album. Will opportunities like this exist for artist in Chicago if this ordinance passes?

My partners and I about two years ago put together this Podcast show called Chicago Acoustic Underground www.chicagoacoustic.net in hopes of giving a chance for new acts to have another platform to be heard, and to give them a quality recording and putting together showcases featuring some of the amazing talent this city has to offer.

The response has been over whelming! We have 150,000 listeners in over thirty countries and growing stronger each and every day. We now also have touring musicians now wanting to be on the show that do nothing but praise this great city and its cultural diversifies which now is threaten to be stomped out by government bureaucracy!

This city of big shoulders could get the cold shoulder if these government bureaucrats try to stifle a chance for up and coming artists, and what kind of town will Chicago become? Can anyone on the City Council please explain how this ordinance will not change Chicago's cultural community? Just what kind of Chicago do they perceive?

PLEASE ... Save Chicago Culture!!! - May 11, 2008

With a heavy heart as a local and working Chicago artist, I write and send out this bulletin.

I've come across this grim news this past weekend. What's worse, this is trying to be put into effect Wednesday. PLEASE - take the time to read this...and to pass it on to everyone and anyone you know who may be affected by this (which, in Chicago, could be ANYONE!)

BTW, I have posted links on this very web site to the link below as well as the blog written by Jim DeRogatis from The Chicago Sun-Times which contains the ENTIRE Promoter's Ordinance that I am speaking of. PLEASE - take a moment to read and to pass on. Thank you!

Peace, love and LIVE ART in Chicago!

Stop the promoter's ordinance!

Imagine a Chicago with no Metro or Double Door or Schuba’s. Imagine a Chicago with no Royal George or Bailiwick or Athenaeum. Imagine a Chicago where local music is only heard in the suburbs and theater is limited to Wicked and Jersey Boys.

Scary thoughts. But if the City of Chicago’s City Council doesn’t hear your voice by Wednesday, May 14, they’ll become reality.

On that date the council will vote to approve an ordinance that has the power to stifle creativity in Chicago’s musical, theatrical, and general cultural scenes. With no public discourse or commentary, this proposal has been approved by the City Council Committee and is on the fast track to be pushed into law. It is up to us to let our elected officials know that Chicago’s creative scene is too rich, too varied, and too vital to be regulated in such a blanket fashion.

The details:

The “Event Promoters” ordinance requires any event promoter to have a license from the city of Chicago and liability insurance of $300,000, but that’s just the start:

The definition of “event promoter” is so loosely defined it could apply to a band that books its own shows or a theater company that’s in town for a one-week run.
“Event Promoter” must be licensed and will pay $500 - $2000 depending on expected audience size.
To get the license, applicant must be over 21, get fingerprinted, submit to a background check, and jump over several other hurdles.
This ordinance seems targeted towards smaller venues, since those with 500+ permanent seats are exempt.
Police must be notified at least 7 days in advance of event.
For the complete ordinance, check out Jim DeRogatis’ blog on the Chicago Sun-Times.

We are collecting signatures to present to the council voicing our opposition to this ordinance. YOUR VOICE IS NECESSARY TO ENSURE CHICAGO’S CULTURAL SCENE CONTINUES TO THRIVE. Please leave a comment as your expression of disapproval. These will be presented to the City Council and to all Chicago Aldermen prior to Wednesday’s vote.

Thank you for helping to protect Chicago’s Culture.

OLD YouTube video from PAST shows (digging up the bones der!) - May 8, 2008

Hello, gang!

I stumbled across this video on YouTube. God, do I miss this side-project (can't blame the consequences of why we're not together, however. Again, I take total blame. But, it was fun while it lasted. I'll leave it at that.)

For those who don't know, some of the tracks on "Look Into My Eyes" were songs that were performed, recorded and written by members of Kampus Project. That is the group in this video here taped back and aired in May 2004. Many, many many thanks to Rabbi Doug for this great opportunity! Stay tuned! More at: tvrabbi.com

In this video, KAMPUS PROJECT (LIVE) is:
DAVID KAV(ALIUNAS) - Lead vocals, guitar
NIK WIELGUS - Percussion (i.e. snare drum, djembe, splash cymbal) and vocals
KELLY YACONO - Vocals

(Unfortunately, I can not EMBED Videos on this page at this time. So, please...check it out here:)

New musical and newsletter...news - May 1, 2008

Just wanted to let you know about my upcoming project in the musical theatre world..as well as a newsletter that I now post:

What the $*% is a Song-Poem?

Promoted through ads with headlines reading

"Send in Your Poems - Make Millions – Be Famous,"

Song-Poems are the vanity publishing side of the music recording industry. People who send in their poetry receive notice that their work is worthy of recording – in exchange for the poet sending in a fee. They send [in their] money – hoping [to "make it big!"] In producing the songs, musicians record dozens of songs per recording session, most in one take.

SONG-POEMS WANTED! THE MUSICAL, features dozens of actual song poems (such as "Blind Man's Penis" and "Aliens Stole My Dog") and it tells the stories of a song-poem composer and the everyday people who submit their poetry for "consideration." Be one of the first to see this exciting show!

Also, I just released my newsletter for the month of May.

"I didn't get mine," you say? Would you like a copy?

Then, I invite you to

More shows and a brand-new musical?... thanks for all of the interest! - April 25, 2008

Hey gang!

David Kav here. Writing you all on my last night here in Arizona. Just enough time to re-group. I've literally combed the whole state (from North to South....or, pretty damn close) in one week. From the Grand Canyon to Sedona...looking over the house that Nicolas Cage bought for $25 million...and is now trying to sell (at least, that is the word on the street...which I got from a fellow Chicagoan while here in AZ! Small world, huh?) to the copper mines in Bisbee, it's been beautiful and amazing. However,

back to work. Hmm, considering that music is my work and my living, I really can't complain, right? :D

Going to send out an upcoming newsletter for May on shows, and possible workshops for a brand-spanking-new musical (what's David talking about, you ask? Make sure you receive the forthcoming newsletter by entering your e-mail address to the left of this message and get "on the list." :D

Thanks (as always) for your support. Without your love, interest and support, I definitely wouldn't be here typing this...and you wouldn't be reading this. :D

Peace, love and music,
David Kav

Heading up to Sedona, AZ ... going towards the Grand Canyon! Can't wait - April 22, 2008

Hey there, everybody!

Writing this quick note to let you all know that I'll have VERY limited (if any) access to my computer and phone since I am about to head out and go North to visit Sedona, Flagstaff and head towards the magnificent Grand Canyon out here in beautiful Arizona (see the last news post.) Heh, what a coincidence since today is Earth Day, huh? Yeah, we'll be doing some driving ... but I get to celebrate this gorgeous planet and its majesties with my loving family. Never done that, really. I'm excited.

With that being said, please be patient if you need me to respond to any e-mails or calls that you may make (at this time, calls would probably be a better way to get a hold of me.)

Thanks so much! Talk to you soon!

Peace, love and music,
David Kav

Currently in Arizona...loving the mountains and the scenery! - April 20, 2008

Hello you!

Thanks for reading this...wherever you are! Hope that this finds you well. :D

Want to give a BIG "hello" back to Chicago. Since it is my home, I am missing it. However, I thought that I would be getting into some pretty yucky heat here while visiting my family here in Arizona. Well,

I hit a really sweet spot here! I guess that it really is "dry heat," huh? :) It's absolutely beautiful. First time here - so, I'm soaking up the mountainous beauty, the wonderful sun...and the time to relax (when I can) and to regroup.

Other news, the album is getting closer to being finished. I am excited about this one, guys. The tracks are set. Now, it's getting...umm....everything else in line.

BTW, did you check out the cool feature to sign up for my mailing list? Check it out to your left. (I promise...as I already have with a few people...that I will do it only so often.) :D

Make it a great week! Ttys.
