David Kav: My Story

UPDATED OCTOBER 30, 2009!

WRITING THE RAILS is a "GO!" What is Writing The Rails, you ask? You can find out more at www.writingtherailstour.com OR you can read below (swiped directly from aforementioned website!) D Kav

And we bring you... Writing the Rails (by Leah Jones - Natiiv Arts & Media)
The first time that David Kav sat down with Leah Jones, founder of Natiiv Arts & Media, the idea for a tour bubbled up. Instead of throwing his guitar in the back of a rental car, he would put it on his back, grab a duffle bag and climb aboard an Amtrak train.

David would perform in towns where the train had stations. Stopping to perform at colleges, cafes or bars. Then hop on the next train out of town, share a few tunes in the dining car and perform again a few towns down the road.

The idea was shelved, but only for a couple months and then Writing the Rails was born first over tea and finalized at an impromptu brainstorm with Melissa Pierce, the producer of Life in Perpetual Beta, and Theresa Carter, the founder of The Local Tourist.

Writing the Rails: Memphis

For the first Writing the Rails, David will be traveling from Chicago to Memphis and performing in Champaign-Urbana, Charleston and Carbondale along the way. His goal is to raise money for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and write new songs for his next album. When he gets to Memphis, he’ll perform along the route of the St. Jude Rock N Roll Marathon and (we hope) record a few songs at Sun Studios.

David Kav has been singing for as long as he can remember. Watching his aunt play guitar as a kid (who learned from his father...whom David has never met,) he was intrigued by the seemingly intimidating instrument. Well, of course, as fate would have it, David would follow his (what once seemed like an) infatuation for music by listening to his mother's record collection of Journey, Boston, Neil Young, Chicago records which led to very basic piano lessons which led to clarinet (whahuh?) lessons. David was first chair until 7th grade.

Once David found out that he'd have to keep playing the "licorice stick" in order to learn something cool, like, the saxophone, he immediately dropped that and wouldn't pick up another instrument until he was given an acoustic guitar in 8th grade as a graduation present. Little did the family know that the guitar would be a permanent fixture in his life (just like his father before him, apparently. Genes, huh?)

This led to talent showcases, two rock bands (Comatose and All Things Considered,) a side project (Kampus Project,) and "a partridge in a pear tree" (aka David's debut CD "Look Into My Eyes" - just released last year in 2007.) His current CD "Better You Here Than Alone" features Jen Porter on many tracks with the talents of Nik Wielgus of KAVUS and Chris Tiritilli on lead guitar on "Please Let Me Be." The song "To Thine Own Self," is currently featured on Windy City Records Compilation for Radio One WLUW 88.7 FM for 2009! David is currently working on his third album along with the first installment from the acoustic duo, KAVUS! More works to come from D Kav, KAVUS, and other artists that he finds (or, who seem to find him these days.)
